Despite its relatively small size, Blackpool International Airport (BLK) has a history that can be traced back to 1909, when the UK's first official Flying Meeting was held in the area.

Blackpool's airport continued to develop as an airfield in the 1930s and was officially named Blackpool Airport in the 1950s. It was eventually renamed Blackpool International Airport to reflect its growing number of international flights to popular European destinations such as Dublin, Tenerife and Mallorca.
