Broxburn, in West Lothian, is a small town located to the east of Edinburgh and near to Livingston. It's adjacent to the A8 and close to the M8 motorway - consequently it is a popular base for commuters to nearby towns and cities. Broxburn also includes the area of Uphall.
Broxburn's history is relatively brief. It first started to become an important regional location in the 1820s when the Union Canal arrived at the town, facilitating the movement of trade to, from and through the area. Further significant growth resulted from the discovery of oil in the shale that the area stood on. By 1901, the Broxburn Shale Oil Company employed over 2000 people in the town and was the largest company of its type in the area. The shale oil business continued until the 1950s, when changing usage patterns and cheap foreign imports of crude oil made shale oil uneconomic.
Uphall, Broxburn's other half, is an ancient settlement. Its church, Strathbrock St Nicholas, has elements dating back to 1100 and there are a number of other buildings in the area which are 300-400 years old. Uphall is also the home of the Uphall Golf Club, which was founded in 1895.
Today's Broxburn is normally considered to include Uphall and is has several small industrial estates and other business headquarters as well as a substantial residential area, home to around 13,000 people. Broxburn naturally has its own van rental company with a wide range of hire vans available:
