Historically a market town, the economy of Chippenham today is mostly dependent on commuters who live in the town and tourists visiting this historic location. One popular attraction that draws thousands of visitors each year is the Chippenham Folk Festival. Many visitors just come to appreciate the architecture and charming ambiance of this traditional town - which still has some original wooden-framed buildings dating from the 15th century.

The town is located on the banks of the River Avon and is home to more than 28,000 people. Although in a highly rural area, Chippenham's good road and rail connections mean that it remains a popular place to live and visit. Fans of Eddie Cochran may now that his death in 1960 was the result of a car crash near Chippenham - as a result, the town hosts an annual Eddie Cochran festival in his memory. This is just one of many events that take place each year - another popular event is the town's annual beer festival.
