Historically a staging post for coaches to Brighton, Croydon underwent considerable development during the 19th century - including becoming the terminus for the world's first ever public railway (in 1803). Today's Croydon is also the home of the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology - which has produced stars like Katie Melua and Amy Winehouse - and the filming location for much of the ITV police drama The Bill.
Croydon Airport was also the main airport serving London until the late 1950s, when it was superseded by London Heathrow. Public transport links today are restricted to road and rail - especially the East Croydon and West Croydon railway stations.
Croydon plays host to a wide range of music and theatrical events throughout the year, many of which are held at the Fairfield Halls (frequently used by the BBC). Other venues include the Croydon Clocktower and the Warehouse Theatre.
