Croydon, in South London, is one of the major commercial and residential metropolitan centres within the Greater London area.

It has a long and varied history, including being the terminus for the world's first ever public railway (in 1803), the home of the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology - which has produced stars like Katie Melua and Amy Winehouse - and the filming location for much of the ITV police drama The Bill. Croydon Airport was also the main airport serving London until the late 1950s, when it was superseded by London Heathrow.
