Cumbernauld's history stretches back to Roman times, when it was one of the most northerly settlements of the Roman Empire. The nearby Antonine Wall provided some protection from the hostile natives to the north and allowed the area on which Cumbernauld now stands to develop into a settlement.

Over the centuries, Cumbernauld continued to develop into a small town with both the mining and textile industries playing a role in the town's economic development. However, it wasn't until after World War II that Cumbernauld became the much larger town it is today.

Cumbernauld was one of several towns in central Scotland which were designated as new towns in the late 1940s and 1950s. Their primary purpose was to provide new, better quality housing for residents of inner city Glasgow - particularly the Gorbals. Cumbernauld gained new town status in 1955 and its population rapidly grew to and exceeded the 50,000 target set for the town.

Today, Cumbernauld is home to more than 50,000 people and is also the base for a number of large employers in the technology, public sector and industrial sectors.
