Dartford, in Kent, is perhaps best known for its proximity one of the major crossings of the River Thames. The Dartford Crossing is made up of two parts - the Dartford Tunnel, a twin-bore tunnel usually used for northbound traffic, and the Queen Elizabeth II toll bridge, usually used for southbound traffic on the London Orbital A282. Many people think of the London Orbital as being solely the M25, but this section is actually an A road.

Dartford's riverside location meant that for many centuries it was a popular location for heavy industry and manufacturing. Raw materials and the finished products could be transported on the Thames, in the days before an effective road and rail network.

The 1980s and 90s saw considerable industrial decline for the town, but Dartford has since began to undergo regeneration and today is once more a propsperous, thriving town.
