Droitwich, or Droitwich Spa, to give it its full name, is a spa town in Worcestershire. Known for its salt pans, a town has been established in the vicinity ever since Roman times, when Droitwich was known as Salinae, thanks to its salt pans.
The town of Droitwich Spa is situated in Worcestershire, about 8 miles to the north of Worcester. It lies alongside the M5 motorway and is close to the junction with the M42, providing excellent access to the Midlands, the south west and the north west. Droitwich is also close to Redditch and Kidderminster and is within commuting distance of Birmingham.
Attractions for residents and visitors to Droitwich include The Old Cock Inn – an 18th century public house that is reputed to have been used by Judge Jefferies for one of his Assizes. Salt mines have played a large part in the town’s history and historical exhibits and artefacts relating to salt working are popular today. Examples of these include a preserved salt merchant’s house and a sculpture of salt workers at work in the town centre. The Droitwich Spa Lido is also popular in summer, when it is open.
