East Kilbride is home to around 75,000 people and has the distinction of having been Scotland's first new town. It was designated a new town in the aftermath of World War II, when considerable amounts of new housing were required to replace the bomb-damaged housing stock of nearby Glasgow.
East Kilbride's new town heritage means that as with other new towns - such as Milton Keynes - it was carefully planned and benefits from a better-designed road network than many older towns. Also like Milton Keynes, East Kilbride's roads have an inordinate number of roundabouts and the town is divided up into a number of self-contained residential zones.
East Kilbride is a major regional shopping centre, and outside Glasgow has perhaps the largest concentration of shopping centres in the area. The town centre is home to no fewer than six shopping malls - although there are some plans to update and redevelop parts of this area.
