London's Gatwick Airport is the UK's second busiest airport, after Heathrow. In 2007, Gatwick handled more than 35 million passengers, with a mix of scheduled and charter flights serving approximately 200 destinations. Around 80 airlines use Gatwick and on its busiest day ever – in 2008 – Gatwick saw 895 aircraft movements. Gatwick Airport even has its own railway station, which operates 950 rail services a day from its six platforms. The majority of Gatwick’s passengers – 82% - are leisure passengers and the airport’s car rental offices hire out more than 180,000 cars each year.
The area on which Gatwick stands has been in use as an aerodrome since 1930 and the first commercial flights took place in 1936.
