Oxford is most famous for its university; the University of Oxford is one of the oldest and most prestigious in the world, having been established since the 12th century. The city itself is known to have existed since the 8th century AD and has a great many buildings of historic interest.
Known as the "city of dreaming spires", Oxford is a diverse and mixed community with a large student population. The city actually has two universities - Oxford Brookes University gained its charter in 1991 and is very well regarded.
